This was the reason, because she wanted him to see her now, because, although she was patient, she was tired of waiting, that she had walked boldly up the slope of the Sierra Madre behind Asch on the morning that he finally came to wait for her on the crest. It was the reason that she had lingered and pretended not to be able to keep pace with Asch which she could have done easily had she chosen. She felt it would be good to do nothing better than Asch. Now, as she approached him, she took to breathing rapidly in order to appear tired."

Elsa finally reveals herself to Asch Penda in the Sierra Madre, under the bare sun. He becomes drowsy, but only pretends to sleep while she swims in a hidden pool. She is free, strong, and beautiful, without shame. And his love for her grows, finally acquainting Asch with fear.
